But it’s taken longer for the company to figure out a solution for recycling plastics than it took for NASA to put a man on the moon, as pointed out by this story from The New York Times about Keurig’s new recyclable pods. “It’s hoped that in the process the lid won’t be enough of a contaminant and it will still be recycled,” Alexander said. “But the foil lid is problematic.” Alexander said Keurig has done testing at a number of materials recovery facilities and certified that the company's pods are 90% sortable. To test the machines, we made drinks of every possible size using different brands and blends of pods available on the Keurig site.
Though the first cup got to only about 187 degrees, subsequent cups peaked precisely at 192. While the Moukey does have LEDs that you can switch on or off, it doesn’t have a disco ball. This face is supposed to resemble an owl for some reason, but we think it looks more like a severely unpleasant human.
Semi-Automatic Marachekku Oil Machine
As part of our tests, we plugged a Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone—pretty much the industry standard for live vocal mics—into the ¼-inch inputs of each karaoke machine we tested, and it sounded best through the Rybozen. If you already have a home audio setup that you’re happy with and don’t want to deal with storing an entirely new speaker setup, the Rybozen K201 Portable Karaoke Microphone Mixer is a compact and affordable alternative. It’s essentially a microphone receiver that you can insert between your primary audio source (such as a smart TV on which you’d be watching YouTube lyric videos) and your usual speakers .
These were some of the crisper microphones we tested, and while they don’t sound as clear as the mics that came with the Tonor, it’s easy to dial in a decent tone with the control knobs. Like the other karaoke machines we tested, the Rybozen has two ¼-inch inputs, in case you want to add some wired mics. More importantly, these inputs amplified sound at the same level as the wireless microphones, without adding any excess noise or mud.
The Best Nespresso Machine (But It’s Not for Everyone)
A Nespresso machine, which brews strong shots of espresso-like coffee, is as fast and easy to use as a Keurig; our upgrade pick can brew coffee-like Americanos, too. It also uses aluminum capsules, which are much easier to recycle than plastic coffee pods. A pour-over setup or French press are a bit more labor intensive, but they’re also much cheaper and more compact than a Keurig, and can make a single cup of coffee that tastes wildly better. The Moukey’s wireless microphones are noticeably lighter than others, and each one has different-color rings around the bottom, so you can tell them apart if you need to. Fortunately, the Moukey has two convenient pop-out microphone holders on the side, making it easier to store the mics between songs. They somehow have too much gain without being very responsive, so we had to sing directly into the top center of the mic, and our voices still sounded a little distorted and muddy.
We also made several cups of coffee using the reusable K-Cup filter, both with ground beans purchased on the Keurig site and freshly ground beans we purchased on our own from Stumptown. Keurig 2.0 machines scan the lids of the cups to ensure they accept only 2.0-compatible Keurig pods, shutting out the third-party pods that erupted on the market after the K-Cup patent expired in 2012. People dislike the 2.0 brewer because of the newly incompatible pods, but the machines have stuck around because they offer the option to brew a full pot. The Singsation has a disco ball on top, right next to the master volume control—the only knob on this karaoke machine.

Then, we launched into some rousing renditions of our favorite Thin Lizzy songs, plus a little Biz Markie and T-Swift for good measure. We tested this while holding the mics at different angles, too, to get a fuller understanding of each mic’s dynamic response. If the karaoke machine came with any equalization or echo options, we tried those out as well, to see how, if it all, they affected the sound. With two good wireless microphones and a delightful disco ball on top, this portable speaker system has everything you need to get the karaoke party started.
Like the Labradoodle, Keurig is one of those things whose inventor regretted ever creating. John Sylvan, the inventor of Keurig K-Cups, told James Hamblin of The Atlantic that he no longer uses K-Cups because they’re expensive and bad for the environment. “This tastes like sucking on the paper filter of a coffee machine,” another tester said. We don’t love that the DC power plug is on the front panel of the Tonor unit, which makes it really conspicuous when you have to plug it in to charge. But all of the electronic controls are on that same front panel, which is otherwise a positive, so we can live with it. What’s more, rowing eliminates the force that other cardio exercises put on joints, making it one of, if not the best piece of cardio equipment, according to Mulgrew.
The lid can be recycled with other aluminum products, but Alexander says any remaining foil from these lids acts as a contaminant to the plastics recycling process and could affect whether the pods are sorted correctly to be recycled. The process itself is easy enough, and recycling pods is an improvement over them ending up in a landfill. But, plastic is much more expensive to recycle than other materials and, frustratingly, putting the K-cups into the recycling is no guarantee they’ll actually be recycled. A recent NPR and PBS Frontline investigation found that less than 10% of plastic in the US recycling pipeline has been recycled. So, even though recyclable pods are better than non-recyclable pods, they’re still not great for the environment.
It also has a built-in FM radio, in case you want to sing along with your favorite station. However, the Moukey isn’t quite as easy to use as the Tonor, and while the unit itself sounds better, the included wireless mics both feel and sound cheaper. The Moukey doesn’t have a disco ball, either—which we wouldn’t mind, if its LED light display didn’t make the speaker look like an angry audience member glaring back at you in judgment from behind a furrowed brow. If you don’t care as much about audio quality and just want to have some fun, the Singsation Star Burst SPKA25 is a great choice.
The Moukey MTs10-2 Karaoke Machine has a better-sounding speaker than our top pick, especially at lower volumes. The basic controls are slightly easier to use, as well, even if some of its bonus features can be confusing. The wireless microphones sound and feel a little cheaper, too—although the machine does come with a convenient pair of mic holders built into the side. Like the Tonor, the Moukey can stream songs over Bluetooth or via an aux-in port, USB drive, or microSD card, and it displays a dynamic LED light show to fuel your onstage fantasies. It doesn’t have a disco ball, however, which is more of a downer than we expected, and the speaker itself, which the company says is meant to resemble an owl, actually looks more like a glowering audience member.
